Onion Bhajis Recipe

Crispy, golden and packed with flavour, make delicious homemade onion bhajis with the Hamilton Beach Deep Fat Fryer. Perfectly fried to a crunchy finish, they’re a tasty Indian-inspired treat made for sharing.

Ingredients 

  • 2 onions finely sliced
  • 100g gram flour
  • ½ tsp gluten-free baking powder
  • ½ tsp chilli powder
  • ½ tsp turmeric
  • 1 green chilli deseeded and very finely chopped
  • vegetable oil for frying
  • ½ cucumber
  • 150g tub Greek-style yogurt
  • 2 tbsp chopped mint

Method 

  • Soak the sliced onion in cold water. Meanwhile, sift the flour and baking powder into a bowl, then add the chilli powder, turmeric, chopped chilli and salt. Gradually add around 100ml cold water and mix into a thick batter.
  • Drain the onion thoroughly and stir it into the batter until evenly coated.
  • Fill the Hamilton Beach Deep Fat Fryer with oil according to the manufacturer's instructions and heat to the recommended frying temperature.
  • Carefully add spoonfuls of the bhaji mixture to the hot oil in batches. Fry for 3–4 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crisp.
  • Carefully remove the onion bhajis and drain on kitchen paper. Season with a little salt and serve warm with raita.
